Perfume vs Eau de Parfum vs Eau de Toilette: What's the Difference?

The Confusion Is Real — But the Answer Is Simple

You've seen the labels: Parfum, Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, Eau de Cologne. But what do they actually mean? And does it matter which one you buy? The short answer is: yes, it matters quite a lot. The difference comes down to one thing — fragrance concentration — and it affects how long your scent lasts, how strongly it projects, and ultimately, how much value you get for your money.

The Fragrance Concentration Scale

All perfumes are made of fragrance oil dissolved in alcohol and water. The percentage of fragrance oil determines the concentration — and the concentration determines everything else.

Parfum (Pure Perfume / Extrait de Parfum)

Concentration: 20–40% fragrance oil
Longevity: 10–12+ hours
Projection: Intimate — stays close to skin
Best for: Special occasions, evening wear, sensitive skin (less alcohol)

Parfum is the most concentrated and most expensive form of fragrance. A single application in the morning can last the entire day and into the evening. Because it contains less alcohol, it's also gentler on sensitive skin. A little goes a very long way — 2 dabs on pulse points is all you need.

Eau de Parfum (EDP)

Concentration: 15–20% fragrance oil
Longevity: 6–8 hours
Projection: Moderate — noticeable but not overwhelming
Best for: Everyday wear, office, evenings out

EDP is the sweet spot for most fragrance lovers. It offers excellent longevity, good projection, and is available across a wide range of price points. Most of the premium fragrances you'll find at Bottled Bliss are EDPs — they deliver the full character of the fragrance without requiring constant reapplication.

Eau de Toilette (EDT)

Concentration: 5–15% fragrance oil
Longevity: 3–5 hours
Projection: Light to moderate — fresh and airy
Best for: Daytime wear, summer, casual occasions

EDTs are lighter and more casual than EDPs. They're perfect for hot weather when you want a fresh, clean scent that doesn't overpower. Many classic men's fragrances are EDTs — think fresh citrus, aquatic, and fougère styles that work beautifully in the heat.

Eau de Cologne (EDC)

Concentration: 2–4% fragrance oil
Longevity: 1–2 hours
Projection: Very light
Best for: Post-shower refresh, very casual use

EDC is the lightest concentration available. It's designed for a quick, refreshing burst of scent rather than all-day wear. Apply liberally and reapply as needed.

Which Concentration Should You Buy?

It depends on your lifestyle and what you want from a fragrance:

— If you want all-day wear with one application, choose Parfum or EDP.
— If you want a fresh, light scent for daytime or summer, choose EDT.
— If you want the best value for money, EDP typically offers the best balance of longevity and price.
— If you have sensitive skin, Parfum's lower alcohol content is gentler.

A Note on Indian Weather

In India's heat and humidity, lighter concentrations like EDT can feel more comfortable during the day. However, the heat also amplifies fragrance projection — so an EDP applied sparingly can perform beautifully even in summer. For air-conditioned offices and evening events, EDP and Parfum are always the right choice.
